Scale RC airplane build kits
how it works
Parts are cut from 5mm (3/16") foam board panels and assembled to create the three dimensional shapes that make up the airplane. Electronics are then added and connected to control surfaces. Apply decals or paint to customize and you are ready to fly.
Foam board has become a popular material for building RC airplanes in recent years, it is inexpensive, commonly available and its versatility make it the perfect material for builders and designers.
Flying Penguin RC uses Readi-Board foam board from R.L Adams Plastics. Commonly available at dollar Tree stores. We use this specific brand for two reasons. The paper can be removed easily and it can be molded into round, scale shapes. Other brands can work as long as they are also 3/16" or 5mm thick..
flying pengun rc designs
Flying Penguin RC designs are available in four formats, DIY build kits, printed plans, templates and free plans.
DIY Build Kits include all the materials you need to build the airframe and wing. Foam board panels, wood dowels and washers, control rods, Velcro, sandpaper and elastic bands.
Templates or stencils are machine cut from poster board and used when foam board can be found locally. Templates can be used many times to create multiple models, simply trace the parts onto the foam board, cut them out and you are ready to build.
Printed Plans can be quickly attached to the foam board making the build faster than using templates. Although they are typically used only once it is possible to save the paper and reuse. Templates are better suited for building multiple models and you will also need to supply your own foam board to use the printed plans.
Flying Penguin RC offers its early prototype plans free to help give people a gateway into the hobby. If you have access to foam board you can download, print, build and fly.
Flying Penguin RC creates scale representations of popular historic and current commercial and military airplanes. As well as a few of our own designs, we use powerful 3D design software to push the limits of design and unlock the potential of foam board.
a hobby that connects us
One of the best things about this hobby are the many communities and RC groups that connect people with a common passion for flight from around the world.
